Power Outage Alerts for Jersey Shore Homes: Know When the Power Goes Out at the Shore House
Chris Stefanov, Izzo Network · October 28, 2026

Winter on the Jersey Shore brings nor'easters, high winds, and the occasional ice storm, and power outages tend to come with them. If your shore house sits empty for days or weeks at a time, a long outage can mean a cold house, a sump pump that stopped running, or a refrigerator full of spoiled food that nobody finds until the next visit.
A smart home can't stop the power from going out, but it can tell you right away, keep the most important things running, and show you what is happening inside the house while you're back home inland.
What a power outage alert actually needs
The tricky part is obvious once you think about it: when the power goes out, most smart devices go out too, and so does the internet router. An alert that depends on all of that will never arrive. A good setup plans for it:
- A small battery backup for the router, modem, and smart home hub, so they stay online for a few hours after the lights go out.
- A way to detect that wall power is gone, such as a smart plug or sensor that reports when it loses power while the hub is still running on battery.
- A backup way to send the alert, such as a cellular connection, if the internet provider's equipment in the neighborhood goes down too.
Keep the important things running
Not everything needs backup, but a few things matter a lot in an empty shore house:
- Heat. A smart thermostat that reports the inside temperature lets you see if the house is cooling down during an outage.
- The sump pump. A water sensor next to the pit and a power alert on the pump's outlet tell you if it stopped working.
- Freezers and refrigerators. A temperature sensor inside shows how warm they got while the power was out.
- The network and hub. These need to stay up so every other alert can get to your phone.
Know when the power comes back
The alert that the power came back is just as useful as the first one. It tells you how long the house was without power, which helps you decide whether someone needs to check the freezer, the heat, or the pipes. With a local system such as Home Assistant, the house can also turn the heat back to the right setting, restart the music or lights you had scheduled, and send you a short summary of what happened.
Protect against problems after the outage
Power often comes back with a surge, and some devices don't restart cleanly. A few simple steps help:
- Put surge protection on the network equipment, TVs, and audio equipment.
- Set the thermostat, hub, and other key devices to restart automatically when power returns.
- Use automations that check a few minutes later that heat, the sump pump, and the internet are all working again.
Check on the house from home
With remote access set up securely, you can open the dashboard on your phone and see the inside temperature, water sensors, cameras, and the battery backup status, without opening the house to the internet. If something looks wrong, you know whether to call a neighbor, a plumber, or make the drive down.

FAQ
Will my smart home alert me if the power goes out?
Only if it was set up for it. The router, modem, and smart home hub need a battery backup, and something needs to detect the loss of wall power while those keep running.
How long does a battery backup keep the internet running?
It depends on the battery size and the equipment, but a small unit typically keeps a modem, router, and hub running for a few hours, which is enough to send outage alerts and updates.
Can I tell if my sump pump stopped during an outage?
Yes. A water sensor near the sump pit and a power alert on the pump's outlet will warn you if the pump lost power or water starts rising.
Do I need the internet for power outage alerts?
You need some connection to reach your phone. A battery-backed router works for short outages, and a cellular backup connection covers outages that also take down the local internet service.
