Remote Wi-Fi and Cameras for a Vacation Home
By Chris Stefanov ·
To check a vacation home from anywhere, you need reliable Wi-Fi with access points connected by cable, hardwired cameras at the doors and driveway, a recorder in the house, and battery backup for the network. Then the cameras and alerts show up on your phone wherever you are. Izzo Network installs this across the South Jersey shore.

Wi-Fi first
Remote anything depends on the network. One router in a corner closet rarely covers a three-story shore house. Access points on each floor, connected back to the closet by cable, give the whole house a strong signal, and an outdoor access point covers the deck, pool, or dock.
Hardwired cameras
Each camera gets one cable for power and video. There are no batteries to die over the winter and no wireless link to drop in a storm. Cameras usually cover the front door, the driveway, and the back of the house, and a smart doorbell covers the front step.
Recording in the house
Video records to a recorder in the gear closet, so you can scroll back through the week from your phone. If the internet drops, the cameras keep recording locally, and you can check the footage when the connection comes back.
Separate networks
Family and guests use one Wi-Fi network. Cameras, locks, and thermostats use another one that guests never see. It's simpler to manage and keeps a guest's laptop away from the things that run the house.
Battery backup
A battery backup on the network gear keeps the house online through short outages. When the power comes back after a long one, everything restarts on its own.

Questions
- Can I watch my vacation home cameras from my phone?
- Yes, as long as the house has internet. The cameras and the recorder show up in one app on your phone.
- Why not use battery cameras?
- Batteries die, especially in the cold, and wireless links drop. Every camera we install is hardwired with one cable for power and video.
- What if the internet goes down?
- The cameras keep recording to the recorder in the house. You can see the footage when the connection comes back.
- Can the Wi-Fi reach the pool or the dock?
- Usually, yes, with an outdoor access point connected by cable. We test the coverage outside before we leave.
