Lighting and Shades for a Shore House

By Chris Stefanov ·

In a shore house with lots of glass, lighting and shades should be planned together. Motorized shades follow the sun on each side of the house, lighting scenes come up as the shades close, keypads go at the doors and stairs you actually use, and an away scene runs both while the house is empty. Izzo Network installs this from Long Beach Island to Cape May.

Plan them together

Shore houses are built for the view, which means big glass, hard afternoon sun, and rooms that turn into a fishbowl at night. When the shades and the lights are on the same scenes, pressing 'evening' closes the shades on the sunny side and brings the lights up to match. The room never goes dark all at once, and it never glares.

Sun schedules

Ocean-facing rooms get morning sun, and bay-facing rooms get the evening. Motorized shades run on a schedule for each side, protect the floors and furniture, and keep the AC from fighting the glass. You can still raise any shade from a keypad or your phone.

Keypads where you walk

Keypads go at the doors you come in through, at the top and bottom of the stairs, and by the bed. Most houses need only a few scenes: arrival, evening, night, and away. Dimmers are matched to the lamps so nothing flickers.

Away mode

When the house is empty, the away scene closes the shades and runs a few lights on a schedule, so the house doesn't sit dark for weeks. You can run it from your phone after you've left the island.

Finished house or open walls

In a build, power for the shades and cable for the keypads go in while the walls are open. In a finished house, the plan works around what's already there, and some windows are easier than others. We look at each window during the walk-through.

Questions

Can my shades and lights work together?
Yes. They run on the same scenes, so one keypad press can close the shades and set the lights.
Can motorized shades follow the sun?
Yes. Shades can run on a schedule for each side of the house, and you can still move them from a keypad or your phone.
How many lighting scenes does a shore house need?
Most houses do well with arrival, evening, night, and away. We set them up with you before we leave.
Can you add shades to a finished house?
Often, yes. It depends on each window and where power can reach. We check during the free walk-through.
Do you publish prices for lighting and shades?
No. Each house is quoted after a free walk-through. Call (609) 415-0011, Mon–Fri 8am–6pm.
